This is the punishment for Indonesia after the country banned Israeli athletes from participating in the World Gymnastics Championships, which are taking place in Jakarta.
In early October, when the athletes were completing entry procedures to participate in the 2025 World Gymnastics Championships, the Israeli delegation was surprised to receive information that the Indonesian immigration authority had refused to issue visas for them to enter the country. Of the 86 participating teams, only Israel was denied a visa by Indonesia. Among the athletes with high hopes for winning gold medals from Israel is Artem Dolgopyat, the reigning world champion in the men’s floor exercise.
The IOC responded to the ban from Indonesia. They called for dialogue but could not change the situation. The IOC Executive Board immediately met and decided to “end all forms of dialogue” with the Indonesian Olympic Committee. The punishment was issued shortly after. Indonesia is banned from hosting future Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, Olympic events or conferences.

An IOC executive board representative said: “Indonesia’s actions deprive athletes of the right to compete peacefully and prevent the Olympic movement from demonstrating the power of sport.”
The International Olympic Committee admitted that it could not find a solution, so it came to this decision. Meanwhile, the Israel Gymnastics Federation (IGF) said that Indonesia’s decision had created a “dangerous precedent”. They also criticized the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for awarding the right to host a major event like the world championships to Indonesia.
This is not the first time Indonesia has banned Israeli athletes from entering the country. In 2023, the authorities of the two provinces of Bali and Central Java, the host of the 2023 U20 World Cup, announced that they would not allow Israeli players to enter the country to compete. At that time, Israel was the reigning European runner-up. Indonesia’s stubbornness caused them to lose their qualification as host of the U20 World Cup.
